Flash Builder 4 introduces a rich set of tools for PHP configuring access to Data services

Flash Builder 4 introduces a rich set of tools for configuring access to data services. The Flash Builder documentation and tutorials can help you get started with writing PHP and ColdFusion services as well as configuring your applications to access these services.

However, the Flash Builder documentation examples and tutorials use client-side typing. You can also write PHP and ColdFusion services that implement server-side typing. Server-side typing simplifies the workflow in Flash Builder, and also provides server code that is easier to understand and maintain.

Client-side typing

Flash Builder uses client-side typing for services that do not specify data types for arguments or return values. To implement access to these services, Flash Builder needs to know the data types for the arguments and return values. Flash Builder tools introspects the services, prompting you to configure the necessary custom data types.

Here are links to the Flash Builder tutorials that use client-side typing:

This article provides documentation and an example for server-side typing in PHP. Later, I’ll provide a separate example for server-side typing in ColdFusion.

Server-side typing

Both PHP and ColdFusion allow you to define custom data types in server code. Flash Builder recognizes the custom data type during introspection of services. This simplifies the access to the service – you do not have to walk through wizard screens to configure custom data types.

This blog post contains an example for PHP that shows how to implement server-side typing. This basic application lists employees from a database. It also includes an input form to add new employees. This blog post contains the full source listing for both the client and server, plus a mini-tutorial.

This example use the same database used in the Flex tutorials that illustrate Flash Builder access to data services.

Adobe Flash Player Administration Guide for Flash Player 10.1

This Adobe Flash Player Administration Guide covers Adobe Flash Player 10.1. It describes Flash Player, how it’s installed, how it works, and how you can control it to suit the needs of a specific network environment. This document is intended for IT or administrative professionals who manage the installation or use of Flash Player for multiple users in a controlled environment.

In order to deploy Flash Player, you must first acquire a license to do so. Distribution licenses are free of charge and can be acquired through the online licensing application. For answers to a number of questions regarding Flash Player licensing and deployment, see the Adobe Player Distribution FAQ.

Read the guide:

What’s in the guide

The Adobe Flash Player Administration Guide contains the following chapters:

Chapter 1 – Flash Player environment: This chapter describes the different environments in which Flash Player runs, where Flash Player files are stored on the system, the processes that Flash Player generates, and information on determining which version of the player is installed on a system.

Chapter 2 – Player installation: The licensed installers for Flash Player are available in a number of forms. This chapter includes sections on EXE installation, Active Directory installation, SMS and Adobe Catalog installation, interactive MSI installation using SMS, Windows registry keys, DMG installation for Macintosh, customizing player behavior, and other topics.

Chapter 3 – Administrator settings: This chapter describes a number of ways you can create and place files on the end user’s machine to manage features related to security, privacy, use of disk space, and so on. This chapter includes sections on privacy and security settings (mms.cfg) and the global FlashPlayerTrust directory.

Chapter 4 – User-configured settings: This chapter provides information on options that end users can set for managing privacy and security settings when running Flash Player on their computers. This chapter includes sections on accessing user settings, privacy options, local storage options, update options, security options, and the user FlashPlayerTrust directory.

Chapter 5 – Security considerations: Because it is critical to maintain the security and integrity of your users’ computers when installing Flash Player, this chapter provides an overview of security, focusing on those aspects of particular interest to administrators deploying Flash Player. Adobe has developed a number of web pages, white papers, chapters in other books, and TechNotes that address these security issues, as well as others, in more detail. This chapter includes a security overview and discusses security sandboxes for local content, compatibility with previous Flash Player security models, and data loading through different domains. It concludes with a list of additional security resources.

Flex for Java Developers | ActionScript 3 for Java Developers

Last week I did an eSeminar on AS34J – ActionScript 3 for Java Developers. This was originally a presentation that Chet Haase and I did at Devoxx. Later Chet also published the presentation as a two part article on JavaWorld (Part 1 and Part 2). Check out the eSeminar and let me know what you think.
